After the exhausted Pornography, The Cure turned towards something lighter and poppier, and Japanese Whispers captures exactly that turn: the singles 'Let's Go to Bed', 'The Walk' and 'The Love Cats' together with their B-sides, recorded between November 1982 and November 1983. The band had shrunk to Robert Smith and Lol Tolhurst, who had moved from drums to keyboards, so drum machines and synthesizers largely set the tone. 'The Love Cats' became the group's first UK top 10 hit. The collection originally came out in December 1983.
