The Sickness set the template for a whole wave of American nu-metal in 2000. Disturbed's debut first appeared on Giant Records with Johnny K producing, and it runs on Dan Donegan's mechanically tight, down-tuned riffing and David Draiman's staccato phrasing. His outburst on Down With The Sickness became the band's calling card, alongside Stupify, Voices, and Shout 2000, a reworking of Tears for Fears' Shout. The album peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 but held there for 106 weeks, and was certified five times platinum in the United States in 2018.
