After the electronic EBM, made with Benjamin John Power aka Blanck Mass, Editors took a more direct approach for Surface, Echo & Sound. In the summer of 2025 the band regrouped in Gloucestershire to play the songs through together in one room. Frontman Tom Smith brought in acoustic song ideas, which the group developed together. It is the British band's eighth studio album, with eleven tracks, on the Play It Again Sam label. The singles "Call It In" and "The Rush" came out ahead of it; the video for the latter was shot in Tokyo.
