Message personnel originally appeared in November 1973 and was Hardy's first album for Warner, produced by Michel Berger. The title track opens with a spoken passage she wrote herself, after which Berger's melody takes over; it became one of her best-known songs and has since been recorded by dozens of other singers. The album also holds L'amour en privé, written by Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier for the film Projection privée, and L'habitude, a Georges Moustaki song she sings together with him. Hardy wrote less of her own material in this period and presented herself mainly as an interpreter. MOJO writer Andrew Male places the album at number 9 in his ranking of her work.
