Duke came together after Genesis took a break in which Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford each worked on material of their own. A large part of the album was written as a continuous suite around a character called Albert, but in the final running order that block is pulled apart: Behind The Lines, Duchess and Guide Vocal at the start, Duke's Travels and Duke's End at the close. In between sit the two songs that drew the band towards a wider audience, the shifting time signatures of Turn It On Again and the Collins-penned Misunderstanding. Duke originally appeared in 1980 and was the first Genesis album to enter the UK chart at number 1.
