The Grateful Dead's debut captured the band as it sounded in 1967: a group fresh out of the California scene that cut a set in a short stretch of studio time. It leaned heavily on blues and garage-rock covers, including "Beat It On Down the Line", "Morning Dew", "Cold Rain and Snow" and the extended "Viola Lee Blues". The sprawling, improvisational identity the band later became known for is barely present here; this is mostly a direct, raw rock record.
