American Idiot was Green Day's seventh studio album, released in 2004. The record was a concept album and rock opera centered on the character Jesus of Suburbia, dealing with resistance to suburban culture and media saturation during the Bush era. The album included the hits American Idiot, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Holiday and Wake Me Up When September Ends. Several songs were built from multiple sections, such as Jesus of Suburbia, which ran over nine minutes. American Idiot earned the band the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2005. In 2010 a Broadway musical based on the album premiered.
