The Number of the Beast is the third studio album by Iron Maiden, originally released in 1982 and produced by Martin Birch. It was the first album with singer Bruce Dickinson, who replaced Paul Di'Anno, and became the band's first album to reach number one on the UK Album Chart. The singles Run to the Hills and the title track The Number of the Beast grew into classics, as did the frequently performed Hallowed Be Thy Name. Lyrics such as The Prisoner and Children of the Damned were inspired respectively by the television series The Prisoner and by literature about children with supernatural gifts. The album's title and cover led to protests in the United States from religious groups that associated the record with satanism. It is the last Iron Maiden album with drummer Clive Burr.
