Another Side of John Coltrane collects recordings on which Coltrane plays not as a leader but as a sideman, from the years just before and during his own breakthrough. He is heard next to Sonny Rollins on 'Tenor Madness', next to Thelonious Monk on 'Epistrophy', 'Trinkle, Tinkle', and 'Monk's Mood', and next to Miles Davis on 'Someday My Prince Will Come'. The selection shows how his tone and phrasing shifted across those years, from tight bebop craft towards the dense lines he would later be known for.
