Blue Train is the only album John Coltrane recorded as a leader for Blue Note. He cut it on 15 September 1957 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, with a sextet built around Lee Morgan on trumpet and Curtis Fuller on trombone, backed by Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. Coltrane wrote four of the five pieces himself: the slow-burning blues theme of the title track, 'Moment's Notice', 'Locomotion', and 'Lazy Bird'. The album originally appeared in 1958, at a point when Coltrane had just rejoined Miles Davis and was working out a voice of his own.

This edition is a 2-LP in stereo from the Blue Note Tone Poet series, adding the alternate takes from the session.
