John Coltrane recorded Soultrane on 7 February 1958 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio, with the trio of pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Taylor. Every piece on it is someone else's material, from Tadd Dameron's 'Good Bait' and Billy Eckstine's 'I Want To Talk About You' to Irving Berlin's 'Russian Lullaby', which Coltrane takes at a furious tempo. Writing the sleeve notes for this album, critic Ira Gitler coined the term 'sheets of sound' for Coltrane's dense, rapid chord playing. The album originally appeared in 1958 on Prestige Records.
