Five years before Star Wars, John Williams wrote this western score for Mark Rydell's film of the same name, starring John Wayne. The music sits in the American tradition of Aaron Copland: wide brass lines, march rhythms, and an overture that literally opened the film, already a rare habit in 1972. That overture went on to lead a life of its own as a concert piece and has been performed separately ever since, including in arrangements for wind band. It is one of the largest orchestral scores Williams wrote before his work with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

This edition is a 2-LP on gold vinyl, issued as an expanded 50th anniversary edition.
