On 24 February 1969 Johnny Cash played the prison at San Quentin, with the cameras of Britain's Granada Television present. The audience cheers every line aimed at the guards, and Cash plays along openly in the title song San Quentin, which he performs a second time on request. The album gave him his first number 1 on the Billboard 200, where it stayed for four weeks, the only time he managed that in his lifetime. A Boy Named Sue, written by Shel Silverstein and performed live here for the first time, reached number 2 on the Hot 100 and became his only top 10 pop hit. The concert album originally came out in June 1969 on Columbia. This edition is an LP.
