Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash sang in a baritone you recognise instantly, about prisons, faith, guilt and redemption. He started out in 1955 at Sun Records in Memphis, with Luther Perkins and Marshall Grant beside him, and at Columbia built a body of work that ran from homely country hits to protest songs. The live albums from Folsom Prison and San Quentin made him bigger than country alone at the end of the 1960s. After a lean spell came the American Recordings series with producer Rick Rubin from 1994 on, sparsely recorded and full of covers, right up to his death in 2003. He also sang with June Carter Cash and formed The Highwaymen with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson.
