Painkiller was the twelfth studio album by Judas Priest and originally appeared in 1990. It was the first album with drummer Scott Travis, whose double bass drums put the opening bars of the title track on edge straight away. After the smoother Turbo and Ram It Down the band went for higher tempos and harder riffs, with Rob Halford in his most extreme register on Painkiller, Metal Meltdown, and Leather Rebel. Night Crawler and A Touch of Evil carry the slower tension, the latter with keyboards by Don Airey. Chris Tsangarides produced alongside the band, and the album became the last one with Halford before he left in 1992.
