NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert captured Mac Miller's live performance for NPR's Tiny Desk series in 2018, shortly after the release of his album Swimming. During the session, Miller performed three songs: "Small Worlds", "What's the Use?" featuring bassist Thundercat, and "2009". Miller died in September 2018, a few months after the recording. The session was viewed tens of millions of times online and became one of the most-watched Tiny Desk Concerts. To mark the fifth anniversary of Swimming, Miller's estate released the session posthumously on vinyl. The recording showed Miller in a stripped-down, acoustic-focused setting.
