S&M captures the two concerts Metallica played with the San Francisco Symphony at the Berkeley Community Theatre in April 1999. Conductor Michael Kamen, who had floated the idea years earlier, wrote orchestral arrangements around existing material such as Master of Puppets, One and Nothing Else Matters; No Leaf Clover and -Human were written for the occasion. The live album originally appeared in November 1999 and won a Grammy for the performance of The Call of Ktulu.
