St. Anger was made during a period in which Metallica almost fell apart: bassist Jason Newsted had left, James Hetfield went into treatment for his addiction and producer Bob Rock played the bass parts himself. The album originally came out in 2003 and sounds deliberately raw — no guitar solos, jams only pared back into songs late in the process, and a snare drum with an open, ringing tone that came to define the album's sound. The making of it was filmed for the documentary Some Kind of Monster. St. Anger entered the US chart at number one; the title track won a Grammy.
