Darkside originally came out in 1997 on Black Mark Production, the second Necrophobic studio album and the first without co-founder David Parland. Tobias Sidegård took over vocals from Anders Strokirk and Sebastian Ramstedt came in on guitar alongside Martin Halfdan. The sound rests on tremolo riffs and twin guitar harmonies over a tight death metal foundation, heard on "Black Moon Rising", "Bloodthirst", and the title track. Jon Nödtveidt of Dissection guested on vocals for "Nailing the Holy One". The three parts "Venaesectio", "Descension", and "Nifelhel" run through the album as a numbered sequence. For the 2022 reissue Dan Swanö remastered the recordings at Unisound Studio.
