With Re-ac-tor, Neil Young and Crazy Horse turned hard and mechanical. Where earlier records with the band spread out into long solos, this one runs on repetition: "T-Bone" spends nine minutes on two lines of lyrics, and "Shots" ends in bursts of guitar and synthesizer. In between sit the rolling "Southern Pacific", about a railway man put out to pasture, and the jittery "Opera Star". Young worked on the album around the intensive therapy programme for his son Ben, which kept the sessions short and clipped. It was originally released in 1981 on Reprise Records and was the last album he made for the label before moving to Geffen. This edition is an LP.
