John Coltrane recorded Olé Coltrane for Atlantic in May 1961, around the same time he moved to Impulse!. The title piece 'Olé' runs eighteen minutes and is built on a Spanish folk melody carried by a modal, hypnotic pulse. Coltrane plays soprano and tenor saxophone alongside Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Eric Dolphy — credited for contractual reasons as 'George Lane' — on flute and alto, with McCoy Tyner on piano, two bassists in Reggie Workman and Art Davis, and Elvin Jones on drums. With 'Dahomey Dance' and the ballad 'Aisha', the session sits at the hinge between Coltrane's Atlantic and Impulse! years.
