When lockdown wiped out his tour, Paul Weller started demoing at home and finished the songs with his band at Black Barn Studios in Surrey. That became Fat Pop (Volume 1), his sixteenth solo album, released in May 2021 on Polydor and his sixth UK number one. The twelve songs stay short and direct, from the restless synth of Cosmic Fringes to the soul ballad Shades Of Blue, co-written with his daughter Leah. Lia Metcalfe of The Mysterines sings on True, Andy Fairweather Low on Testify, and Hannah Peel wrote the string arrangements for Cobweb / Connections and Still Glides The Stream.
