Nightlife grew out of the work on Closer to Heaven, the musical Pet Shop Boys wrote with playwright Jonathan Harvey, and several of the songs started life as material for that show. The seventh studio album, originally from 1999, sets the club production of David Morales on "New York City Boy" against the string-led "You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk" and the single "I Don't Know What You Want but I Can't Give It Any More".
