With 1999, released in 1982, Prince delivered the double album that carried the Minneapolis sound into the mainstream. The title track and "Little Red Corvette" became the hits that marked his breakthrough to a wide audience. He played and produced most of it himself, weaving funk, new wave and synth-pop into a tight, self-made sound. It was his first record to reach multi-platinum status.
