On Controversy, originally from 1981, Prince pushed the new wave side of his Minneapolis sound further: bare drum machines, synths and guitar, with lyrics in which religion, politics and sex run into one another. He recites the Lord's Prayer in the title track, 'Ronnie, Talk To Russia' addresses Reagan directly, and 'Annie Christian' works through the shootings and killings dominating American news at the time. Against that sit the slow jam 'Do Me, Baby' and the danceable 'Let's Work'. It was his fourth studio album and the run-up to 1999.
