Prince recorded The Truth at Paisley Park in late 1996; it originally appeared in 1998 as the fourth disc alongside the triple album Crystal Ball, which he sold outside the record companies. It was presented as his first acoustic album, though electronic treatments are certainly part of it: acoustic guitar and voice sit up front, with processed echoes and effects around them. Songs such as 'The Truth', 'Dionne', 'Man In A Uniform' and the closing 'Welcome 2 The Dawn' leave his songwriting bare. The album did not get a release of its own on vinyl until 2021.
