With Avalon, Roxy Music closed its career as a studio band in 1982. The eighth album was recorded at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas with Rhett Davies as co-producer, and it sounds unlike anything the band had made before: hushed, spacious, and stripped of the sharp edges of the seventies. Bryan Ferry sings with restraint over layers of synthesizer, Phil Manzanera's guitar and Andy Mackay's saxophone are reduced to colour, and More Than This, Avalon, and Take a Chance with Me became the singles. The instrumental Tara closes the album. Avalon spent three weeks at number 1 in the UK and sits at number 336 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (2020 edition). This edition is an LP, half-speed remaster.
