Echo, originally released in 1999, was made during Petty's divorce and it shows in almost every song. Rick Rubin produced, as he had on Wildflowers, and kept the recordings spare. Room At The Top opens slow and bleak, Free Girl Now is one of the few outright rock moments, and on I Don't Wanna Fight Mike Campbell takes the lead vocal himself. It was the last studio album with bassist Howie Epstein, who had played in the band since 1982. The album entered the American charts at number 10. This edition is a 2-LP.
