Pump originally appeared in 1989 and confirmed the comeback Aerosmith had started two years earlier with Permanent Vacation. Producer Bruce Fairbairn recorded the album at Little Mountain Sound in Vancouver and had the band play short instrumental links between the songs, using dulcimer and horns among other instruments. Love in an Elevator led off as the first single, while Janie's Got a Gun, about child abuse, won the band a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. What It Takes and The Other Side followed as singles. The album went multi-platinum in the United States.
