The Great Escape was originally released in September 1995 on Food Records, Blur's fourth studio album. It closes the run that began with Modern Life Is Rubbish and Parklife: another gallery of English characters stuck inside their own lives, from the burnt-out commuter of "Country House" to the chilly future sketched in "The Universal". Stephen Street produced, with brass, strings and a pointedly theatrical streak. "Country House" won the much-reported August 1995 chart race against Oasis and "Roll With It", and the album entered at number 1 in the UK. "Stereotypes" and "Charmless Man" were also released as singles.
