Bob Marley & The Wailers

Bob Marley & The Wailers started in Kingston in 1963 as a vocal trio with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, recording at Coxsone Dodd's Studio One and, around 1970, with Lee "Scratch" Perry, where the rhythm section of brothers Aston and Carlton Barrett became the foundation of the sound. With Catch a Fire (1973) Chris Blackwell signed the band to Island Records and brought reggae to a rock audience. After Tosh and Bunny Wailer left in 1974, Marley carried on with the I-Threes on backing vocals: Natty Dread, the Lyceum live album with No Woman, No Cry, Rastaman Vibration and, after the attempt on his life in December 1976 and his move to London, Exodus and Kaya. Survival and Uprising, with Redemption Song, were the last albums released in his lifetime; Marley died in Miami on 11 May 1981, aged 36. Confrontation (1983) and the compilation Legend (1984) came out posthumously, and Legend went on to become the best-selling reggae album of all time.
