- (Subtract) was released in 2023 as the fifth and final installment in Ed Sheeran's series of albums named after mathematical symbols. Sheeran wrote the album after his wife was diagnosed with a tumor during her pregnancy and following the death of his friend Jamal Edwards. The songs deal with loss, fear and depression. Musically he opted for a restrained folk and singer-songwriter sound, produced together with Aaron Dessner of The National. The single Eyes Closed reached number 1 in the United Kingdom, followed by the single Boat. The album itself also topped the UK albums chart.
