For the Roses was originally released in 1972 as the fifth studio album by Joni Mitchell and was her first release on Asylum Records. The album formed the bridge between the sparse, restrained Blue from 1971 and the jazz-tinged Court and Spark from 1974, with richer arrangements in which Tom Scott's horns took a prominent role. Mitchell wrote the songs in seclusion on the coast of British Columbia, after a period in which she withdrew from public life. The lyrics dealt with the downside of fame, with relationships and with addiction, as in Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire. The single You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio became her first hit in the American top 30. In 2007, For the Roses was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress.
