Fourteen songs from the years 1984 to 1991 sum up what The Pogues stood for: Irish folk played with the energy and the ragged edges of punk, with Shane MacGowan as singer and lyricist. The selection runs from early drinking songs such as Streams of Whiskey and Sally MacLennane to the more broadly arranged later singles, with Fairytale of New York, the Christmas duet with Kirsty MacColl, as its best known moment. Dirty Old Town, a reworking of the Ewan MacColl song, and The Irish Rover, recorded together with The Dubliners, are here too. Steve Lillywhite and Elvis Costello handled most of the production; Joe Strummer produced Rain Street. The album was dedicated to Deborah Korner, the partner of drummer Andrew Ranken, who died shortly before its release. This compilation originally appeared in 1991, reached number 11 on the UK albums chart and was certified gold there.
