Richard D. James composed most of this fourth studio album on a Macintosh, and you can hear it in the drums: stuttering, breakneck breakbeats drawn from jungle and drum and bass, a style that later became known as drill 'n' bass. On top sit slow, fragile melodies and string parts, partly sampled from a violin he had bought at a car boot sale. On 'To Cure a Weakling Child' he twisted his own voice into that of a child. Entertainment Weekly heard "a new warmth and wistfulness" in '4' and 'Girl/Boy Song'. The album was originally released in 1996 via Warp Records.
