Big Thief recorded U.F.O.F. in June 2018 at Bear Creek Studio, a secluded studio among the trees in Woodinville, Washington. The band tracked the songs live in one large room, and some of them had been written only a few hours earlier. It became the group's third studio album, released on 3 May 2019 via 4AD, with producer Andrew Sarlo: hushed folk built around Adrianne Lenker's voice, with acoustic guitars that now and then drift out into strange, floating sounds. According to AllMusic the title stands for 'UFO friend', a line from the title track. Alongside 'U.F.O.F.', 'Cattails' and 'Century' were released as singles, and the album was nominated for the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album.
