AllMusic calls Man on the Moon III: The Chosen 'a return to form for Cudi', and the album completes the trilogy Kid Cudi started in 2009 with Man on the Moon: The End of Day. It is his seventh studio album, and as on the first two instalments he worked with regular producers such as Dot da Genius, Plain Pat, Emile Haynie and Mike Dean. Across eighteen tracks he sings and raps under thick layers of ad-libs and distorted, robotic vocals, broken up by the cold drill beat of 'Show Out' with Skepta and Pop Smoke. Phoebe Bridgers sings on 'Lovin' Me' and Trippie Redd on 'Rockstar Knights'. The album grew out of 'Tequila Shots', a fast, driving track in which Cudi addresses his inner demons and his mental health.
