In early 1991 Miles Davis went into the studio with hip-hop producer Easy Mo Bee, known for his work with Big Daddy Kane and The Notorious B.I.G. The idea was to put Miles' trumpet over breakbeats, samples, and rap. When Davis died in September 1991, only six pieces were finished. Easy Mo Bee built the rest of the album around unreleased trumpet recordings, which made Doo-Bop Davis' final studio album and his first posthumous release. The album was originally released in 1992 on Warner Bros. Records and won a Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance the following year. The best-known tracks are The Doo-Bop Song, Chocolate Chip, and High Speed Chase, where Davis' trumpet rides over hip-hop beats and samples.
