Miles Davis

Miles Davis stood at the start of just about every major turn in post-war jazz. He played in Charlie Parker's quintet as a teenager, set cool jazz in motion with the Birth of the Cool sessions and, through the 1950s, led the quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones that recorded the Prestige classics Workin', Cookin', Relaxin' and Steamin'. On Kind of Blue (1959) he moved improvisation from chords to scales, and that album is regarded as the best-selling jazz record of all time. What followed were the orchestral collaborations with arranger Gil Evans, among them Sketches of Spain, the second great quintet with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, and from In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew onwards the electric jazz-rock. After almost six years of silence he returned in 1981 and kept working until his death in 1991 on records such as We Want Miles and Tutu.
