Wish You Were Here, released in 1975, was Pink Floyd's ninth studio album, following the successful The Dark Side of the Moon. The record is largely a tribute to former band member Syd Barrett and revolves around themes of absence, alienation and the coldness of the music industry. Its heart is the nine-part suite "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", which opens and closes the album. In between are "Welcome to the Machine", the cynical "Have a Cigar" and the title track "Wish You Were Here", which became one of the band's best-known songs. Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason combined expansive compositions with sharp lyrics. The album is regarded as one of the highlights of the group's catalogue.
