On Seventeen Seconds, originally from 1980, The Cure sound suddenly nothing like they did on the debut: slow, bare and cold, with a lot of space between the instruments. Robert Smith produced the album with Mike Hedges and recorded it in roughly a week; bassist Simon Gallup and keyboard player Matthieu Hartley had only just joined. 'A Forest' became the group's first single to reach the UK top 40 and stayed a fixture of their live set for decades afterwards.
