The Cure's 1979 debut sounds bare and hurried: three musicians - Robert Smith, Michael Dempsey and Lol Tolhurst - playing short, nervous songs with sharp guitar and almost no ornament. '10:15 Saturday Night', 'Grinding Halt' and 'Fire in Cairo' belong to the earliest material the band held on to, and a cover of Jimi Hendrix's 'Foxy Lady' with Dempsey on vocals stands out sharply against them. The track selection and the sleeve were put together by Fiction boss Chris Parry rather than by the band, something Smith has distanced himself from repeatedly since. Little here points to the slow, atmospheric direction The Cure took from Seventeen Seconds onwards.
