Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston grew up singing gospel in Newark, New Jersey, as the daughter of singer Cissy Houston, and carried that tradition into pop music. Her self-titled 1985 debut produced three US number one singles, and in 1987 Whitney made her the first woman to enter the Billboard 200 at number one. In 1992 she starred in The Bodyguard, whose soundtrack, led by "I Will Always Love You", became the best-selling film soundtrack of all time. Her sound then moved towards R&B and hip-hop on My Love Is Your Love, while the soundtrack to The Preacher's Wife took her back to gospel. Houston died on 11 February 2012, aged 48. She sold more than 200 million records worldwide.
