Rock in a Hard Place is the only Aerosmith album without Joe Perry: he walked out in 1979, and Brad Whitford left during the sessions, so Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay filled the guitar parts. Steven Tyler spent more than two years on the album with producer Jack Douglas, and it originally came out in 1982. Lightning Strikes became the best-known track, alongside the instrumental Prelude to Joanie and the raw opener Jailbait. It went gold in the United States, well short of its predecessors; Perry and Whitford rejoined the band in 1984.
