Aretha Franklin made these recordings in 1956, aged fourteen, during services at the New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit where her father C.L. Franklin preached. They appeared at the time as Songs Of Faith and were later reissued under various titles, among them The Gospel Soul Of Aretha Franklin. It holds Precious Lord in two parts, Never Grow Old, The Day Is Past And Gone and Yield Not To Temptation, sung over organ, handclaps and the responses of the congregation. This is the earliest recorded music of her career, more than ten years before Respect.
