John Coltrane recorded Olé Coltrane in May 1961 for Atlantic, in the same weeks that he moved over to Impulse!. The title piece runs eighteen minutes and is built on a Spanish folk melody, carried by a modal, hypnotic pulse. Coltrane plays soprano and tenor next to Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Eric Dolphy on flute and alto, credited as 'George Lane' for contractual reasons. McCoy Tyner is at the piano, with Reggie Workman and Art Davis both on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. Together with 'Dahomey Dance' and the ballad 'Aisha', the session sits on the hinge between Coltrane's Atlantic and Impulse! years.
