On Roots, originally released in 1996, Sepultura traded part of its thrash speed for down-tuned riffs and Brazilian percussion. Producer Ross Robinson steered the band towards the sound that would shortly be called nu metal, and for Itsari the group travelled to the Xavante people in Mato Grosso to record on location. Ratamahatta, made with Carlinhos Brown, and Roots Bloody Roots became the best known tracks; it was the last album with co-founder Max Cavalera. This edition is a 2-LP, an expanded reissue with demos, rough instrumental mixes and the 2 Meter Sessions recordings.
