The five school friends from Phoenix who called themselves Alice Cooper signed to Frank Zappa's Straight Records at the end of the 1960s. Pretties for You became their debut: short, erratic pieces closer to the psychedelic garage rock and free-form playing of that scene than to the hard rock the group would later break through with. The recordings shift tempo and key abruptly, with songs such as Titanic Overture, Fields of Regret and Reflected, which was rewritten a few years later into the hit Elected. The album originally appeared in 1969, played by Vincent Furnier, Glen Buxton, Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway and Neal Smith, and sold poorly at the time.
