Alice In Chains
Alice In Chains formed in Seattle in 1987 around guitarist Jerry Cantrell and singer Layne Staley, with Sean Kinney on drums and Mike Starr on bass. The band was filed under grunge, but leaned harder on metal than most of its home-town peers: slow, grinding riffs, dragging tempos, and above all the two-part vocals of Cantrell and Staley. Facelift (1990) was the first album from that scene to be certified gold, Dirt (1992) pushed its lyrics about addiction and decline further still, and the largely acoustic EPs Sap and Jar of Flies showed another side; in 1994 Jar of Flies became the first EP ever to enter the Billboard 200 at number 1.
After the self-titled album of 1995 and the MTV Unplugged session of 1996 the band fell silent. Layne Staley died in 2002, Mike Starr in 2011. Since 2006 William DuVall has sung alongside Cantrell, a line-up that produced Black Gives Way to Blue (2009), The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here (2013), and Rainier Fog (2018).
This collection brings together Alice In Chains on vinyl, LP and CD: studio albums, EPs, live releases, and reissues from both eras.
