Dirt was the second studio album by Alice In Chains, originally released in 1992 on Columbia. Producer Dave Jerden captured a sound slower and heavier than the debut: Jerry Cantrell's stretched-out riffs, drums hanging behind the beat, and the two-part vocals of Cantrell and Layne Staley. The lyrics deal largely with addiction and decline, in 'Junkhead', 'Sickman', 'God Smack', and the title track. 'Rooster' stands apart: Cantrell wrote it about his father, who served in Vietnam. The album reached number 6 on the Billboard 200 and produced the singles 'Would?', 'Them Bones', and 'Down in a Hole'. It was the last album with bassist Mike Starr, who was replaced by Mike Inez in 1993.
